World Book Day 2022
Thursday, 3rd March saw scores of students at our school dressed as characters from their favourite books, joining students across the world to celebrate World Book Day 2022. All week, students had special assemblies, led by Miss Garrett, Head of English, in preparation for the big day.
The focus of the presentation was on the importance of reading, even for a few minutes each day. Students watched an inspirational TED Talk given by Lisa Bu about how she valued the opportunity to read books, especially those banned in the country she was born in. Miss Garrett also highlighted the number of popular books that have been banned in other countries around the world, including some that are considered liberal democracies.
On the day, it wasn’t just the students who took part, but many members of staff also, and not surprisingly, the English Department lead the way. Can you guess the characters from the photo of the English teachers?
All students received a £1 World Book Day voucher to put towards the purchase of a book. The vouchers can be redeemed at all bookshops and most supermarkets.
In addition, as part of the school’s drive on improving literacy, every form group has a set of brand-new reading books which will be read together each morning during form time on three days each week.
Did you know?
- On average, pupils who read 15 minutes or less a day will only encounter 1.5 million words during their time at school
- If a pupil reads 30 minutes a day, they will have read over 13 million words during their time at school! Think about how you could use all of those words!
- There are over 130 million books in print across the world
- The term ‘bookworm’ originates from insects who live in and feed on the binding of books
- Reading has been scientifically proven to make you smarter, and more importantly, happier!
