St Mary's Catholic High School

Young Citizens Mock Magistrates' Court Trial

Students from Years 8, 9 and 10 competed in a virtual Young Citizens Magistrates Court Mock Trial on Wednesday, 27th April.  They were competing against other schools from across South London.

While our team did not win, the judge commented that the team from St Mary’s was, “Excellent to watch.  It is clear that you had prepared thoroughly and well done.”

Our team was articulate, confident, determined and highly collaborative.  Well done to the lead lawyers Allegra (10P) and Florian (9P) who led the prosecution and defence teams!

The Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition helps young people understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives, gaining an insight into how the legal justice system works. Schools are given access to resources, including a specially written criminal case, to help teams prepare legal arguments. After preparation, teams take part in a local heat and go head-to-head with other schools to prosecute and defend the case.
